At Breckon Hill Primary School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas.
A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history.
The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Breckon Hill is based on the National Curriculum and ensures a structured approach to this creative subject and is primarily linked to topics in both KS1 and KS2 wherever possible.
We provide a range of learning experiences for our pupils through class visits and out of school learning. The local area is also fully utilised to support and develop the art curriculum. We have engaged with local Art Gallery, MIMA through our Arts Award.
Early Years Foundation Stage

Pupils are taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
Pupils are taught:
Children keep their art work in a folder which travels with them throughout their school lives and we also ensure sketch books evidence their developing skills.
Art is assessed and developed through foundation subject formative assessment. This ensures progression within Expressive Arts and Design, their progress is tracked twice a year.
The impact of the Art curriculum is monitored by the subject leader and evidenced in an annual portfolio
